On June 8, 2026, this portal published an editorial investigation into André Marques Pereira Ramos, known in the sport as “André Careca,” a Brazilian jiu-jitsu instructor linked to the Palms Sports structure in Abu Dhabi, where he is reported to teach with direct access to students, including minors. Since then the case has moved through formal channels in Brazil, and the company that employs him has continued not to respond.
The June reporting brought together two sets of accounts. A recent case, from December 2025, involving an exchange of messages and images with a 16-year-old girl, and accounts from multiple independent sources describing inappropriate physical contact with girls and children in Brazil over roughly two decades, including a first-person account from an adult woman about abuse she says she suffered as a child. The identities of the victims and sources were and remain protected.
Before publishing, our newsroom sent three formal communications to Palms Sports, on May 22, June 2 and June 4, 2026, requesting an institutional position. None were answered. The named individual responded on June 6 by personal email, stating that he had no knowledge of any investigation, proceeding or formal accusation and reserving the right to pursue legal measures, and his statement was published in full in the article, as required by Brazilian Law 13.188/2015.
The formal record at the Rio de Janeiro Public Prosecutor’s Office
Following the publication, our newsroom obtained the Record of Assistance (Termo de Atendimento) issued by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, under reference MPRJ no. 202600209730, dated July 8, 2026, registering the formal intake and the taking of statements concerning the facts addressed in the article.
The document confirms that a formal record, including the taking of statements, was registered with the Public Prosecutor’s Office under that reference, and it does not express any determination by the Public Prosecutor’s Office regarding the facts. Our newsroom has no access to any subsequent developments, and proceedings involving children and adolescents are held under legal confidentiality in Brazil, which prevents third-party consultation.
The reported facts were also communicated, in June 2026, to the competent child protection authority, which acknowledged receipt in writing, and to the Ombudsman’s Office of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the State of Rio de Janeiro, under communication no. 1110270, filed on June 25, 2026.
One statement in the June article is corrected
The June 8 article stated that our editorial review had not located, in public searches, a formal police record corresponding to the reported facts. That was accurate on the day it was written. The Public Prosecutor’s Record of Assistance is dated July 8, one month later, which makes that statement no longer current, and it is corrected by this publication. The original article now carries a note pointing to this text.
Five communications, two deadlines and no reply from Palms Sports
This portal sent five formal communications to Palms Sports regarding this case, on May 22, June 2, June 4, June 11 and August 4, 2026, addressed to nine separate institutional email addresses, including the company’s senior leadership. Two of them set a formal response deadline, the most recent on August 14, 2026. As of this publication, no institutional response has been received.
In May 2026, in a separate matter involving an instructor, the same company replied to this portal in under two hours, through the same channel.
Accounts received by our newsroom indicate that the named individual remains active within the company’s structure. This portal has not obtained institutional confirmation on that point, because Palms Sports has not answered any of the questions sent to it, including the one expressly asking what precautionary measures, if any, are in place regarding his access to students, including minors, while the matter is reviewed.
